Landmark Theater's Themed Cocktails Celebrate The Arrival Of New Movies As Well As Baltimore Neighborhoods

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is less than a week away, and the bartenders at the Landmark Theater are quickly studying up on their film facts.

Like the young wizards at Hogwarts, they will spend the coming days mixing various liquids until they discover the winning concoction. They'll analyze characters, major plot points, themes and colorful scenes from the movie's trailer to make the perfect cocktail.

It has been this attention to detail that has wowed throngs of moviegoers at Landmark Theaters Harbor East for the past year. The upscale movie theater is one of the few - maybe the only one - in the state that features a full bar. The bar staff has made the most of this, creating drink menus to accompany popular new releases.

"People get a kick out of drinking them," said bartender Jon Talley. "Even after the drink is off the menu, people will ask for them."

The theater started serving themed drinks when the Sex and the City movie opened in May 2008, offering a menu with a signature drink for each of the four major characters. The bartenders knew they had struck liquid gold when waves of moviegoers - many of them die-hard fans of the show - flocked to the bar to order the drink associated with their favorite character.

Dan Hogan, the theater's general manager, has been pleased with the popularity of the cocktails.

"When we started out, I don't think it was noticed initially," Hogan said in reference to the themed drinks. "As we've gone along, our guests have come to expect it. It adds a little something to it."

The menu that accompanied Quantum of Solace featured nine drinks relating to various characters and movies from the James Bond series. Yes, there was an 007 Martini. And, yes, the menu's signature drink, The Vesper, was shaken and not stirred.

The menu for He's Just Not That Into You, a romantic comedy based in Baltimore, represented the evolution of a relationship. It started with Cupid's Cosmo. It is followed by The First Date Cocktail, French Kiss, Tall, Dark and Handsome, My Girlfriend, Between the Sheets Martini, Friends with Benefits (Bitter Sweet) Martini, The Other Woman Martini, and The Break Up Martini.

There are also drink menus for The Watchmen, Earth and Star Trek.

The theater expanded the themed drink concept to "Summer in Baltimore," a menu that features signature drinks associated with the city.

Two of the staff's favorite concoctions are the Fells Point Square Orangesicle Snowball, which combines Svedka Clementine and Svedka Vanilla vodka with a splash of pineapple juice in Sprite, and Day at the Ballpark - Rootbeer Float, which combines Three Olives Root Beer vodka, Svedka Vanilla vodka, and Coke, topped with organic whipped cream.

The menu also includes: The Hampden Pink Flamingo (Svedka Raspberry vodka and Malibu rum served in a blend of pineapple juice and Sprite with a dash of grenadine); Federal Hill Domino Sugar (A Domino sugar-rimmed glass of Voga Sparkling Pinot Grigio with a hint of red raspberry juice); Little Italy's Tomato Basil Mary (Three Olives Tomato vodka, basil, and a dash of Tabasco sauce in tomato juice); The Water Taxi (Svedka Citron vodka served with white cranberry juice and Sprite with a splash of Blue Curacao garnished with a Swedish Fish); and Sunset on the Harbor (Brinley Gold Mango rum combined with orange juice and soda water with a dash of grenadine).
