Baltimore Olympian Carter retires during nationals event

James Carter has reached the finish line of his track and field career. At 31, the veteran 400-meter hurdler out of Mervo and Hampton University, a two-time Olympian and three-time U.S. national champion, announced his retirement Sunday after failing to complete his event at the USA Championships at Hayward Field, Eugene, Ore. After hitting several hurdles in the final of the nationals, Carter stopped at the eighth barrier, then said, "This is for me, the end."

Mother Goose winner 'Rachel' moves to summer home in N.Y.

Scarcely 12 hours after her record-setting victory in Saturday's Grade I, $300,000 Mother Goose at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y., Preakness winner Rachel Alexandra stepped into a van that carried her north to Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., which will be the base for her summer campaign. "She ran a big race," said trainer Steve Asmussen of the 3-year-old daughter of Medaglia d'Oro, who set a stakes record of 1 minute, 46.33 seconds for the nine furlongs.

Mariners puncture Armor in last game before playoffs

The Mariners intercepted five passes, including two that were returned for touchdowns by defensive back Andre Letren, in a 70-22 rout of the D.C. Armor on Saturday night at 1st Mariner Arena. The Mariners (9-5) will play at the Reading Express (11-3) in an American Indoor Football Association (AIFA) first-round playoff game Thursday at 7 p.m. Baltimore has defeated Reading twice this season.

Pro soccer: : Crystal Palace Baltimore takes on Real Maryland at 7:30 tonight at UMBC Stadium in a United Soccer Leagues Second Division match originally scheduled for last Friday. Riding back-to-back wins over Wilmington and Bermuda, the Baltimore side will be looking to avoid the regular-season sweep by Real after losing home and away in May.

Pro lacrosse: : The Washington Bayhawks (2-5) tied two Major Lacrosse League records and ended their losing streak with a 16-14 win over the Chicago Machine (1-6) Saturday in Milwaukee. Kyle Dixon equaled the single-game mark for two-point goals with three, and the Bayhawks matched the MLL single game two-point goal record by a team with five.
