Team USA holds off Australia, 8-7, to capture World Cup

The United States defeated Australia, 8-7, in the final game of the 2009 Federation of International Lacrosse World Cup in Prague. Team USA goalie Devon Wills made seven saves and had three ground balls to earn Player of the Match honors. Caroline Cryer led the U.S. in scoring with three goals. This is the sixth time the U.S. has won the World Cup, and the fourth time it has defeated the Australians in the final. The first half went back and forth, with three ties and two lead changes, ending with a tie at 3 at the break. Team USA scored five unanswered goals to start the second half. Then Australia gained momentum at 4:53 when Wills received a yellow card for pushing Australian attacker Marlee Paton (one goal). Melissa Williams scored on an open net on a free position to narrow the gap to 8-5. Australia rallied with a goal to make it 8-6. Then, with less than two minutes remaining in the game, Heather Williams scored her second goal to make it 8-7. The U.S. maintained possession for the next minute, running the clock down to preserve the win.

McDonogh soccer standout Kansaye commits to Terps

McDonogh soccer standout Mamadou Kansaye, who is set to play his fourth year on varsity this fall, has made an oral commitment to play at Maryland. The center midfielder, who earned second-team All-Metro honors, scored 10 goals and added 18 assists to help lead the No. 1 Eagles (20-1) to their second straight Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference championship last fall.

Caps take 3 forwards, 3 defensemen to finish draft

The Washington Capitals selected six players in the last six rounds of the 2009 NHL draft, held Saturday at the Bell Centre in Montreal. The Capitals drafted three forwards and three defensemen who join first-round pick Marcus Johansson. In addition, Washington acquired a fifth-round selection in the 2010 draft in exchange for defenseman Sami Lepisto, who played seven games for the Capitals this past season. Dmitri Orlov, a defenseman from Novokuznetsk, Russia, was Washington's second-round selection. In the third round, Washington selected Cody Eakin, a center from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Washington's fourth-round selection was defenseman Patrick Wey from Waterloo of the United States Hockey League. Brett Flemming, a defenseman from Regina, Saskatchewan, was Washington's fifth-round pick. Right wing Garrett Mitchell, also from Regina, was the Capitals' sixth-round selection. Washington closed out the draft by taking left wing Benjamin Casavant in the seventh round.
