Reimold's Blast Lifts Orioles Over Nats

He Hits Go-ahead Hr In 5th, Then 'pen Closes Door

Before Reimold hit the home run, Trembley had told Guthrie that he would go back out to pitch if the score was tied or the Orioles still trailed. Guthrie had thrown 95 pitches, 39 of them in the first inning.

Guthrie (6-7) allowed back-to-back two-strike singles to start the outing and then walked three of the next four hitters he faced, two of the free passes bringing in runs.

Guthrie hadn't walked three hitters in a game in 11 of his 15 outings, including six consecutive starts.

"That's what pitching is, being able to grind through the tough ones and, hopefully, being able to take advantage of the situation when you're pitching really well," Guthrie said.

"This was a huge win that I can't take much credit for. I think the defense and the hitting was why we won this game."

Brian Bass relieved Guthrie after Reimold's homer and failed to retire any of the three batters he faced. That's when Trembley went to his bullpen and summoned Albers, who has a 0.68 ERA in his past 10 outings.

"Obviously, you want to try and keep the lead, but as long as I give up one and come out with the tie, that would be pretty solid," Albers said of his mind-set entering the spot.

"I was hoping to get a ground ball, to use my sinker, and fortunately I was able to get one."

Jim Johnson followed with two scoreless innings, benefiting from another double play turned by Roberts and Andino on the speedy Willie Harris in the seventh. George Sherrill pitched a perfect ninth for his 16th save in 18 opportunities.

"I think defense is the biggest part of the game," Andino said.

"You saw it there. It turns the game around. It gave us momentum. It really helped us a couple of times tonight."
