Badly Mistaken

Orioles Commit Numerous Miscues, Execute Poorly In 2nd Straight Loss

June 25, 2009|By Jeff Zrebiec , jeff.zrebiec@baltsun.com

The lineup offered a slew of uninspired at-bats, swinging at bad pitches, and going 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position. They had the leadoff runner on in five of nine innings but did nothing with it. Nick Markakis struck out with a man on third and one out in the first inning. Huff hit into a double play in the fourth and Robert Andino popped up a bunt attempt with a man on and the Orioles trailing by a run in the seventh.

Marlins right-hander Ricky Nolasco, who entered the game with a 7.15 ERA, might have pitched a shutout had Bonifacio not botched Markakis' sixth-inning ground ball that led to two Orioles runs in the sixth.

"We've said that a lot of the success we've had recently has been because we've played very good baseball and we've played all 27 outs," Trembley said. "But we gave some outs away, and that really was the difference in the game."

Trembley felt that the tone was set in the first inning. Roberts and Pie hit back-to-back singles. With Markakis batting, Roberts broke for third. Pie should have started immediately toward second or stayed on first. Ultimately, he tried to advance, but was thrown out easily.

"I got a late jump," said Pie, who was starting in center field in place of the slumping Adam Jones. "I have to stop. I have to pay attention [to Roberts], but I don't see him very well."

Matt Albers had gotten two quick outs in the bottom of the seventh before Bonifacio reached on an infield single. Bonifacio, one of the game's fastest players, got a great jump on an attempted steal, and Wieters probably shouldn't have thrown the ball to second. When he did, the throw sailed into center field. Bonifacio raced to third and came all the way around to score when he noticed Pie still holding the ball.

"I have to throw the ball," Pie said. "I think I forget who is running. That's my fault."

Pie will probably be reminded of that again today.

"This is a game obviously you learn a great deal from," Trembley said. "Hopefully, it doesn't happen again."
