On Sunday, Guthrie allowed a second-inning homer to Greg Dobbs, who was starting in place of the illness-stricken and hospitalized Ryan Howard, and nothing else over seven innings. He held the Phillies (36-31) to three hits and two walks, and retired 19 of the final 22 hitters he faced.
"I think it was all right," Guthrie said. "I made some mistakes, some that were hit and others that weren't. I don't think I come out of this game feeling that was my best stuff, but the consistency was there and we got the outs when we needed them. That's the most important thing."
Trembley said Guthrie told him Saturday night that he would have a good game, and the pitcher delivered.
"He was at his best [today]," Trembley said. "That's Jeremy Guthrie. It was great that we could get him a win."
It wasn't easy as the Orioles were overwhelmed at times by Hamels, who finished with 10 strikeouts, the most by a pitcher against the Orioles all season. But the Orioles scratched across runs in the seventh and eighth inning against Hamels and then turned the game over to their increasingly reliable bullpen.
Johnson, who has given up one earned run in his past 15 1/3 innings, caught a break when first base umpire Larry Vanover ruled that the Orioles' Ty Wigginton had tagged Jimmy Rollins after his bouncer down the first base line. Replays showed clearly that Wigginton whiffed on the tag, and Phillies manager Charlie Manuel was ejected protesting the call.
In the ninth, Sherrill's 15th save was highlighted by third baseman Melvin Mora, who made a great diving play to retire Matt Stairs for the first out of the inning.
"Of course, it feels good," Mora said. "This shows everybody that we have something special here and we can beat anybody."
