"In those days, Rev. Brackett didn't have a car and he'd walk those bricks and city streets at all hours to minister to those who were in jail," Mrs. Wright said. "Finally, the church got together and we were able to give him a car, which he learned how to drive."
Mrs. Wright also recalled his abilities at counseling families.
"He was so into helping people and so many families. He was able to take couples who had separated or divorced and put them back together again. I remember he married one couple twice," she said. "He was truly a man among men."
Dr. Brackett had been president of the Maryland Baptist Aged Home and was a past president of the United Baptist Missionary Convention.
He had served as vice president of the Baptist Ministers' Convention, member of the board of the Hampton University Ministers' Conference, and on the executive board of the New England Baptist Convention.
In 1980, then-Mayor William Donald Schaefer appointed Dr. Brackett to the first of two terms on the city fire board.
The former Normount Avenue resident, who in recent years lived with a daughter in Woodlawn, enjoyed reading and travel.
His wife of many years, the former Helen Rowlette, died in 1993.
Services for Dr. Brackett will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at his church, 2035 W. Baltimore St.
Surviving are two daughters, Barbara B. Robinson of Woodlawn and Brenda M. Henderson of Morgan Park; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
