Crime Briefs

June 20, 2009

A Baltimore man charged in the August 2006 killing of his girlfriend's mother was sentenced Thursday to life in prison with all but 30 years suspended after pleading guilty to second-degree murder, according to the city state's attorney's office. Lawrence Gee, 35, of the first block of S. Monastery Ave. and his girlfriend, Carolyn Redd, were arrested in 2007 in the death of Mary Page, 63. Police found the body of the Walters Art Museum security officer at her home in the 200 block of N. Culver St. after a call from museum staff concerned about her absence from work. Page was stabbed, strangled and beaten, the city state's attorney's office said. Page had evicted Gee and Redd from her house for theft and drug use, witnesses told police investigating the case.

Gang activity probed in fatal Govans stabbing

City police are investigating whether the fatal stabbing of a 19-year-old man during a fight between a large group of men in the Govans area could signal the resurgence of a notorious neighborhood gang. Police said Friday that the victim had approached the 600 block of Tunbridge Road, off York Road, with a group of 15 men from the McCabe Avenue area and that they intended to start a fight in retaliation for an attack on one of their friends. Anthony Guglielmi, a police spokesman, said it was not clear whether the fight was gang-related, but for decades a gang called the McCabe Avenue Boys sparred with a rival neighborhood crew called the Old York Road Boys. Absent from news reports for the past decade, the McCabe Boys were referenced in a recent federal indictment as "friends" of Eric Brown, who police say is a Black Guerrilla Family leader who frequented a Northeast Baltimore club shut down by police because of continuing violence. The victim's name was withheld pending notification of family members, police said. A 16-year-old boy also was injured with stab wounds to his right arm, but his wounds were not considered serious.
