Rain Could Drag U.s. Open Into Tuesday

June 19, 2009|By Teddy Greenstein , Tribune Newspapers

"It was a combination of wind, rain and all the rain gear you have to wear," he said. "The ball just wasn't going very far."

Brehaut went to qualifying school 13 times before earning his tour card at 35. That was 11 years ago. Since then he has become golf's Crash Davis - good enough to thrive only on the mini-tours.

He tied for 17th at the 2007 U.S. Open, but people still ask about his Plan B.

"I don't know," he said. "My wife and I have talked about flipping houses. I love to [putter] around my house ... with my tool belt on."

Those tools could come in handy at Bethpage, where the greens took on enough rain to become unplayable. Not even squeegees could save them.

As he headed to the parking lot Thursday afternoon, Ogilvy conceded: "It's kind of a relief not to be out there playing anymore."
