Brooklyn Park man gets maximum term in slaying

A Brooklyn Park man with a criminal record involving drugs and guns was sentenced Monday to 30 years in prison for the May 3, 2008, fatal shooting of an Annapolis man. Deonte Desmund Boyd, 25, received the maximum sentence for second-degree murder, which is what Anne Arundel County prosecutors were seeking, citing the crime and his criminal past. In April, Boyd entered an Alford plea, acknowledging there was enough evidence to convict him but not admitting guilt, to a reduced charge of second-degree murder and illegal use of a handgun. He had been charged with first-degree murder. The victim was Michael Lee Thompson Sr., 31. Annapolis police said the men were seen arguing just before Thompson was repeatedly shot and found in the first block of Pleasant St. in Annapolis.

2 men in custody after Crofton bank robbery

Two Prince George's County men are in police custody after a man was robbed of a bank deposit bag containing an undisclosed sum of money outside a Wachovia Bank in Crofton on Wednesday morning, Anne Arundel County police said. Shortly before 11 a.m., a man was approaching the bank in the 1600 block of Crofton Centre with a deposit bag when he was assaulted by another man who grabbed the bag and got into a gold Buick driven by a second man, said Justin Mulcahy, a police spokesman. A witness gave police a description of the car and its license number. At westbound Route 32 near the Route 198 ramp, the driver lost control and crashed into a tree alongside Fort Meade. The driver was taken by state police helicopter to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he was listed in critical condition and placed under guard. The passenger, Lawrence Geraud Day, 43, of the 11000 block of Ketterling Circle in Upper Marlboro, was taken to Laurel Regional Hospital as a precaution and released into police custody. Day is charged with robbery, assault and theft over $500. Charges against the 20-year-old driver, whose name was not released, are pending.
