Clemson, Purnell agree to two-year extension

Clemson men's coach Oliver Purnell has agreed to a two-year contract extension that will keep him with the Tigers through 2016. Although the deal hasn't been signed, Purnell, a former Maryland assistant, and athletic director Terry Don Phillips have signed a memorandum of understanding dated June 1 that outlines the improved package. Purnell's base salary jumped $50,000 a year to $275,000. His supplemental income improved to $1.1 million each year, up from $775,000 guaranteed in a two-year extension agreed to in 2008. The Tigers have gone 25-11, 24-10 and 23-9 the past three seasons.

Rutgers women: : Epiphanny Prince, who averaged 19 points last season and was a third-team All-American, is skipping her senior season to play professionally in Europe. She plans to enter the 2010 WNBA draft.

AC Milan-Chelsea sales at M&T Bank surpass 60,000

The Ravens have sold more than 60,000 tickets to the AC Milan vs. Chelsea Football Club soccer exhibition July 24 at M&T Bank Stadium. The match - the first soccer game at the stadium - is part of the World Football Challenge, a six-city round-robin tournament being played in the United States this summer. Pletcher new trainer for Quality Road

Quality Road, recovered from a hoof injury that knocked him out of the Kentucky Derby, has a new trainer in Todd Pletcher, who says the Florida Derby winner could make his next start in the Jim Dandy Stakes on Aug. 1 at Saratoga. Previously trained by Jimmy Jerkens, the 3-year-old colt was transferred to Pletcher's barn Monday by owner Edward P. Evans.

Nicanor: : Nicanor, a full brother to Barbaro, will run today at Delaware Park in a 1 1/8 -mile turf allowance. Nicanor broke his maiden with a 151/4-length turf victory May 13.

Ackley sets CWS mark in Tar Heels' 11-4 win

Dustin Ackley went 5-for-6 and became the College World Series' career hits leader, and North Carolina tied a CWS single-game record with 23 hits in an 11-4 victory over Southern Mississippi in Omaha, Neb. The Tar Heels (48-17) eliminated the Golden Eagles (40-26) and will play Thursday against Arizona State, which lost, 10-6, to Texas.

Auto racing: : Reigning NASCAR truck champion Johnny Benson has been released from a Grand Rapids, Mich., hospital three days after being injured in a fiery crash.
