18-year Mcdonogh Coach Boylan Resigns

McDonogh girls soccer coach Maurice Boylan Jr., who spent 18 years at the helm, stepped down earlier this spring for personal reasons.

Boylan posted a 316-84-34 career mark, leading the Eagles to three Catholic League championships in the 1990s. This past season, McDonogh reached the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference championship game for the second straight year and finished with a 21-1-1 mark, falling to Archbishop Spalding in the title game.

"I need time to evaluate my life and get my priorities in order. I need to focus on myself and my family," Boylan said.

"I enjoyed my time at McDonogh - especially working with the girls - and the school has provided all my kids with great educations."

Three of Boylan's children attended McDonogh, including daughter Lindsay, who will be a junior in the fall.

McDonogh athletic director Mickey Deegan said the school is in the midst of a "national search" to find a replacement.

"Maurice did a great job coaching soccer at McDonogh," Deegan said. "He brought the program to great prominence in the Baltimore area."

Boylan, 57, said he has been spending more time with his elderly father, who suffered a stroke in mid-May.
