DAILY BRIEFING

June 16, 2009

Safeway Inc. said Monday that it is launching a campaign to significantly increase its focus on locally grown produce. Nearly a third of Safeway's produce comes from local sources. The grocer said that shoppers can find more local produce per item at its stores than at a typical farmers' market. Safeway's "Locally Grown" campaign will highlight partnerships with local farmers and promote products in its stores with "Locally Grown" promotional signs that highlight specific growers in the region. Safeway's in-store campaign will also include "locally grown" reference maps that will show the location of key local farmers. Safeway operates 1,739 stores in the United States and western Canada and had annual sales of $44.1 billion in 2008. Its Eastern Division, which includes Maryland, employs about 18,000 people and operates 178 stores with 77 Safeway stores in Maryland.
