A man who eluded police through two districts Friday afternoon was slightly injured during a pursuit, police said. Plainclothes officers in the 1000 block of W. Lanvale St. observed what they believed to be a drug transaction from a vehicle about 3:30 p.m., according to Officer Troy Harris, a police spokesman. As they approached, the suspect fled the scene in a black Dodge Magnum. With a police helicopter observing overhead, police tracked the man to the 300 block of E. 23rd St., where he bailed out of the car and ran through an alley, cutting his hand on a fence. The man refused to show his hands and appeared to reach for his waistband, Harris said. An officer fired one shot, but did not hit the suspect. No weapon or drugs were recovered from the scene, Harris said, and the man, who was not identified, was taken into custody.

Hornsby ex-girlfriend given probation for tax fraud

Andre Hornsby's ex-girlfriend was sentenced to a year of probation Friday and ordered to pay $5,200 in restitution and perform 200 hours of community service for tax fraud by not reporting a sales commission she split with the former Prince George's County schools chief. According to the guilty plea, Sienna Rochelle Owens' employer, LeapFrog Enterprises, received a $1 million contract to provide education technology to Prince George's schools from Hornsby in 2004. Owens, 30, who now lives in Florida, negotiated a commission of $20,000 from the deal, giving half to Hornsby. She never reported her take to the IRS. Hornsby, 55, was convicted last year of wire fraud, witness and evidence tampering and obstruction of justice in connection with a scheme to award lucrative school system contracts to friends and himself. He was sentenced to six years in federal prison.
