News item: About 100 fans waited out the two-hour rain delay in the ninth inning to watch the Nationals score twice Wednesday night at Nationals Park and send their game with the Cincinnati Reds into extra innings. The Nats went on to lose in 12.
My take: Obviously, no good deed goes unpunished, but those are some real baseball fans. Either that, or it was the stadium cleanup crew just waiting to get to work.
News item: The Alabama football program has been placed on three years' probation and will forfeit all victories from 2005 to 2007 that included appearances by players involved in a textbook disbursement scandal.
My take: Believe it or not, Nick Saban might actually be one of the good guys in this one. He suspended several players when this was uncovered during his first season coaching the Crimson Tide, and his program was not penalized with the loss of any future scholarships.
News item: Seattle Seahawks coach Jim Mora has joined the chorus of NFL decision-makers who have said publicly that disgraced quarterback Michael Vick should be allowed to return to the NFL this year.
My take: Still waiting for the first NFL owner or coach to express a willingness to give Vick that second chance.
News item: Southern California men's basketball coach Tim Floyd resigned after allegedly giving $1,000 in cash to a handler to steer O.J. Mayo to the Trojans.
My take: Is that wrong?
News item: Barry Bonds' wife, Liz Watson, has filed for a legal separation from the all-time home run leader.
My take: No, I don't think Bonds has suffered enough. I think he should have to stay married.
