Maryland has since acknowledged a lost opportunity. "Sometimes you may only have one opportunity to see someone play," Frese said before McCoughtry had 21 points and 13 rebounds against the Terps in the March 30 tournament game. "Obviously, we'd love to have her at Maryland."

McCoughtry, the eldest of three girls, will have a homecoming of sorts Sunday in her second WNBA game. She scored 14 points with five rebounds in a May 27 preseason game.

Roi and Sharon McCoughtry, an administrative assistant at an investment management firm, said they will have two busloads of fans leaving for Sunday's game from the church in Pigtown.

Sharon said her daughter, who doesn't lack for confidence about basketball, has been writing a book about her hoops life. It will likely touch on her starring at St. Frances and committing to St. John's University. She enrolled at Patterson instead after failing to score high enough on the SAT to qualify for college ball.

"Once she got drafted into the WNBA, she said, 'Now I know how I'm going to end the book,' " her mother said.
