Edward W. Campbell Jr., a retired University of Maryland professor of urologist who trained numerous medical residents, died of cancer Tuesday at Gilchrist Hospice Care. The Lutherville resident was 76.
Born in Philadelphia, he was an Episcopal Academy graduate and earned a degree at Amherst College. He was a graduate of Hahnemann Medical College, where his father had been a urology professor.
In 1959, Dr. Campbell moved to Baltimore and had additional study at the Brady Urological Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital. During that period, he spent a year in general surgery training at what is now the University of Maryland Medical Center.
In 1964, Dr. Campbell joined Drs. John D. Young Jr. and Earl P. Galleher Jr. in a partnership at the University of Maryland, where they trained urological residents and medical students along with maintaining a private practice.
"He loved people and would think of everyone else before himself," said his daughter, Lisa Campbell Sylvestri of Arlington, Va. "He could easily laugh at himself."
Dr. Campbell advanced to associate professor in 1969 and subsequently to professor.
"He was the consummate physician," said Dr. Galleher. "He gave the same kind and considerate attention to each of his patients, regardless of background, and he was a careful and expert surgical technician in the operating room."
Dr. Galleher said Dr. Campbell's patients always came first. "He also had a great sense of humor, and he was a role model for all - students, residents, nurses and colleagues alike," he said.
His medical colleagues said Dr. Campbell had an interest in neurological dysfunction in the urological patient - including children - and he published numerous papers and gave presentations and lectures at professional meetings.
He retired in 1997 but returned to the University of Maryland weekly to work in the urology clinic. He retired a second time two years ago.
Dr. Campbell was the 1985-1986 president of the Medical Board of the University of Maryland Medical Center. He was a member of the Mid-Atlantic Section of the American Urologic Association and was its 1992 president.
He was a member of the American Urological Association, the American College of Surgeons and also the Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of Maryland.
In 1984, Dr. Campbell joined the Baltimore Monthly Medical Reunion Dinner Club, founded in 1881 to promote fellowship among the physicians at the University of Maryland and the Johns Hopkins schools of medicine.
He enjoyed sailing on the Chesapeake Bay and playing golf with his friends. He spent much of his free time with his grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, 5603 N. Charles St., where he was a communicant.
In addition to his daughter, survivors include his wife of 51 years, Patience "Patty" Merritt; a son, Edward Williams Campbell III of Towson; another daughter, Laura Campbell Farnham of Barrington, R.I.; a brother, Ross L. Campbell of Ambler, Pa.; and six grandchildren.
