Menchov tumbles, gets up to win Giro; Armstrong 12th

Denis Menchov won the Giro d'Italia despite falling in the final half-mile. The Russian lost control on rain-slicked cobblestones and slid for about 10 yards. He got right back up, ran ahead to his bike but then opted to take a spare bike provided by his team car. Menchov entered the final stage - an 8.95-mile individual time trial in Rome - with a 20-second lead on Danilo Di Luca and was comfortably ahead of the Italian at the final checkpoint before he fell. Menchov finished the race with a 41-second advantage over Di Luca, while Franco Pellizotti was third overall, 1:59 back. Seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong finished 12th overall, 15:59 behind Menchov.

Stricker breaks through, takes Crowne Plaza playoff

Steve Stricker birdied the second hole of a sudden-death playoff to beat Tim Clark and Steve Marino and win the Crowne Plaza Invitational in Fort Worth, Texas. It was his first PGA Tour title; he was second, third, fourth, sixth and seventh at other tournaments this year. Clark, who has earned the most money ($12.7 million) without winning a tournament in PGA Tour history, blew a two-shot lead with five holes left, including a bogey on No. 18 that forced the playoff. He also missed a short putt that would have won it on the first hole of the playoff. On the second hole, Stricker put his approach within a few feet and Clark almost matched it - but his approach hit the stick and rolled more than 20 feet away. He missed his birdie try and Stricker made his for his fifth career victory. Clark was left with his seventh runner-up finish.

Champions Principal Charity Classic:: Mark McNulty beat former Maryland coach Fred Funk with a long birdie putt on the fourth hole of a playoff in West Des Moines, Iowa. McNulty closed with a 5-under 66 to match Funk (66) and second-round leader Nick Price (68) at 10-under 203 on the Glen Oaks Country Club course. McNulty and Funk birdied the second extra hole to eliminate Price. McNulty saved par on the third playoff hole - on the par-4 17th - after hitting to the fringe of the green, and Funk's birdie putt lipped out. Funk then couldn't convert a tough birdie try on the par-4 18th, and McNulty made his putt for his first win since 2007.
