Great Scott! Dh Puts 'H' In Homer

June 01, 2009|By KEVIN COWHERD

If you love the game, watching Scott drive a baseball into the seats is a sublime experience.

His homer binge against the Tigers over the weekend even took a little pressure off Matt Wieters, the rookie catcher with the all-world hype.

Two homers Friday night, then the two-run shot off Verlander and suddenly the spotlight is on Scott and the stadium is rocking to "LU-U-U-KE!" instead of obsessing about Wieters' role as the franchise messiah.

So now it's on to Seattle for the start of a six-game trip for the Orioles. Suddenly, the team is feeling pretty good about itself.

The Orioles won five of seven on this latest homestand, got some impressive pitching from some prospects and brought up their catcher of the future, the "Savior in Shinguards" as Baltimore Sun sports reporter Dan Connolly called him.

And they watched Scott's bat come alive in a big, big way.

"This was a good run for us," Scott said with a smile. "Now we just have to start another one."
