With his first game Friday, Orioles catcher Matt Wieters became the second-highest selection from the 2007 amateur draft class to make the majors.
Wieters, 23, was the fifth pick in the first round and the first college position player. Two college pitchers and two high school hitters went before him.
Tampa Bay Rays left-hander David Price, the No. 1 overall pick in 2007, debuted Sept. 14, 2008, at Yankee Stadium and made his first big league start Sept. 22, 2008, at Camden Yards.
The first member of the draft class to make the majors was Washington Nationals lefty Ross Detwiler, who pitched one inning Sept. 7, 2007, in Atlanta. Detwiler, who was selected with the sixth pick, one behind Wieters, was recalled again this year and has made two starts, including one against the Orioles on May 23.
Matt LaPorta, drafted seventh overall as a corner outfielder by the Milwaukee Brewers, made his debut in May as an outfielder with the Cleveland Indians. He has since been sent back to Triple-A.
