16-year-old indicted in Columbia gun incident

A Howard County grand jury indicted a 16-year-old Columbia resident on charges stemming from the attempted robbery of a security guard near the Long Reach Village Center in Columbia this month. Darnell Rasheen Furby was indicted Wednesday on charges of first-degree assault, theft of less than $500; second-degree assault, use of a handgun in the commission of a felony violent crime; and conspiracy to commit assault in the second degree. Furby is one of three people arrested in connection with the crime. Police said they received a number of calls the evening of May 13 from people who heard a series of gunshots in the 8800 block of Flowerstock Row. Investigators arrived and discovered a 27-year-old security guard who said he'd been confronted by three men and punched in the face. One of the assailants fired several shots at him as he fled.

PDL Bloods gang member sentenced in witness killing

Federal prosecutors say a Baltimore gang member sentenced for the killing of a federal witness is the seventh person convicted in the case. U.S. District Judge Richard Bennett sentenced 28-year-old Steven Thompson to 20 years in prison Friday for participating in Carl Lackl's murder. The PDL Bloods gang member was charged with recruiting Jonathan Cornish to shoot the Rosedale man to death in July 2007. Cornish has pleaded guilty and will be sentenced. Lackl agreed to testify after he told authorities he saw Patrick Byers kill someone. Thompson rode along with Marcus "Pound" Antwan Pearson and Michael Randle to Lackl's house, where Lackl was shot three times and died. Byers and Randle have been sentenced. Pearson, Frank Goodman and Ronald Williams have pleaded guilty but haven't been sentenced.
