Three-vehicle accident sends car into bank

3

A three-vehicle accident Friday in Owings Mills sent a car crashing into a bank and two people to an area hospital, Baltimore County police said. The accident happened about noon at an M&T Bank branch in the 9800 block of Reisterstown Road when the driver of a Hyundai Sonata slammed into the back of a Toyota RAV4 that was waiting at a red light, according to police. The Toyota then hit a Lincoln Navigator that was leaving a nearby shopping center. The driver of the Hyundai accelerated, and the car jumped a curb and crashed into the bank, police said. The drivers of the Hyundai and the Toyota were taken to Sinai Hospital in Baltimore with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening. The driver of the Lincoln was not hurt. Police did not immediately identify the drivers. No one inside the bank was injured.

Howard teachers to get 1.2 percent pay raise

4

Howard County teachers will receive a 1.2 percent cost-of-living pay increase after a tentative agreement was reached between the school system and the teacher's union. The raise, which does not include incremental step increases, comes to $5.7 million and will be included in the fiscal year 2010 operating budget the school board is scheduled to approve Monday morning. If approved, teachers would receive the increase in the coming school year. "We are pleased to be able to provide a cost-of-living increase for staff, given the current economic climate," Superintendent Sydney L. Cousin said in a prepared statement. "Our operating budget next year will be $1 million less than this year's budget, nevertheless we were able to reduce costs in other areas enough to offset the $5.7 million needed for this increase." Ann DeLacy, president of the Howard County Education Association, which represents the 5,021 employees in the school system, said she had hoped that step increases would be included in the agreement.

Md. students released from quarantine in China

A group of 21 students and three teachers from a Maryland private school has been released from quarantine after being held by the Chinese government over fears about swine flu. The students from the Barrie School in Silver Spring arrived a week ago in Guizhou province and were quarantined in their hotel for five days, beginning Monday. Chinese officials feared members of the group were exposed to swine flu on their flight from San Francisco to Hong Kong. U.S. consular officials told school officials and parents Tuesday that the passenger who had a fever did not have the illness. However, the group remained confined at a hotel in the city of Kaili until yesterday.
