Foes of natural gas terminal to raise safety, security issues

3

The LNG Opposition Team, a group established to derail the plans of Virginia-based AES, which expects to build a liquid natural gas terminal in eastern Baltimore County, has scheduled a press conference at 11 a.m. today in Turners Station. The event will focus on safety and security concerns with the terminal and an 88-mile pipeline from the Sparrows Point location through Maryland to Pennsylvania. Charles S. Faddis, former department chief for the CIA counter terrorism center, will speak on the potential difficulties with safeguarding the project. AES won approval from federal energy regulators in January, but cannot proceed until it meets 169 conditions, most of which were set by federal and state agencies. Nearly a dozen agencies, community groups and citizens have appealed the permit but the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has yet to rule on those appeals. The conference will be at Fleming Center, 641 Main St. Information: irsd7@verizon.net or 410-388-0898.

House fire in Pasadena causes heavy damage

4

Anne Arundel County fire officials were investigating the cause of a fire Monday at a house in the 7600 block of Lake Drive in the Jacobsville community in Pasadena. The fire destroyed so much of the house that it became too dangerous to extinguish from the inside. Several 911 calls came at about 1:10 p.m. to report a fire at the two-story, single-family home, said fire spokeswoman Debbie Bowen. On arrival, fire officials found 50 percent of the house in flames and several live power lines down. About 34 firefighters responded to the fire, which took about 90 minutes to put out, Bowen said. Two adults were at the house and were not injured. But one of the adults was taken to Baltimore Washington Medical Center in Glen Burnie later in the evening. Bowen said Anne Arundel police were also at the scene investigating.
