Vasquez Noncommittal About Return To Terps

WASHINGTON -- Maryland guard Greivis Vasquez worked out with his third NBA team, the Washington Wizards, on Thursday and said his decision whether to remain in the NBA draft - or return to school - might not be made until just before the June 15 deadline.

The 6-foot-6 junior, who was Maryland's leading scorer and rebounder last season, donned black shorts and a black Wizards practice jersey during a workout at Verizon Center with three other prospects. Flip Saunders, Washington's new coach, led the workout, and team president Ernie Grunfeld watched from a balcony above the practice court.

Vasquez looked comfortable during the drills, which included two-on-two scrimmages and shooting drills from the three-point line and in. He often used his height in the scrimmages to take smaller guards inside. Others participating were Kentucky guard Jodie Meeks, Mississippi guard David Huertas and LSU guard Marcus Thornton.

Vasquez, who previously worked out for the Cleveland Cavaliers and San Antonio Spurs, pronounced Thursday's session "tough" and "fun." He said he is scheduled to work out with the Minnesota Timberwolves soon and attend a pre-draft camp in Chicago.

"I'm a junior, and I don't have any pressure. I'm just trying to learn," Vasquez said. "You can tell if you watch me shooting the ball, I'm getting better. Defensively, I'm getting more comfortable."

Vasquez made nine of 14 uncontested shots from behind the three-point line during one drill late in the workout.

He declined to say what sort of opportunity it would take to persuade him to remain in the draft. The deadline for Vasquez, who hasn't signed with an agent, to remove his name is 5 p.m. June 15. The draft is scheduled June 25.

Meeks, also a junior, was more specific, saying he would probably return to Kentucky if he didn't believe he would be drafted until late in the second round.

Vasquez said he might not make his decision for several weeks.
