You Go, Girl: Female Sports Fans Have Something To Cheer About

May 18, 2009|By KEVIN COWHERD

Are you kidding? Women across America were hooting and hollering and slapping high-fives when you beat Mine That Bird to the wire.

It was like watching Lorena Ochoa beat Tiger Woods at the Masters.

Or Serena Williams smoke Roger Federer at the U.S. Open.

Or - this is the one I'd pay cash money to see - Candace Parker wax Kobe Bryant in a game of 1-on-1. (Yes, I know Parker just had her first child, so she's not exactly in game-shape. But forget that. I'm trying to make a point here.)

So now we'll be watching to see how you do next month at the Belmont Stakes in New York, Rachel Alexandra.

That is, if you actually race there.

I say that because your owner, Jess Jackson, hedged when asked about the possibility of your entering the final leg of the Triple Crown.

"It will depend on her," he said after the Preakness. "We'll wait for three, four days, see how she comes out of the race. ...

"Would we love to run? Yes. Could she win? We think so. We've already shown she can run with the colts."

Oh, you bet you can run with the colts.

On Saturday at the Preakness, it looked like you could run against Danica Patrick's Indy car.

One of Jess Jackson's strong beliefs is that the horse always tells you when he or she is ready to run.

So what do you say, Rachel Alexandra?

Here's the date: June 6, Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y.

Are you up for it?

Sure, it's a longer race (1 1/2 miles versus 1 3/16 miles for the Preakness.)

And you're coming off a couple of stressful wins that can take a physical toll on a thoroughbred.

That's a lot of pressure to lay on you.

But it looks as though you can handle it.

A lot of racing fans would love to see you try.
