On a spring day outside Clyde's of Columbia, Jayne Love looks ready for summer as she waits to meet a friend for lunch. It's hard to believe this fashionable Pikesville psychologist is a grandmother of 10. "My style is kind of eclectic, slightly sophisticated and a little offbeat. I'm not afraid to be different. I like [to look] stylish, but not silly. Because I'm 65." Not that Love is going to let her chronological age get in the way of having fun with fashion. But, she knows her limits. "I wouldn't buy anything that I look silly in. I try to buy something that's age-appropriate but also youthful." We think she's hit it right on the mark.
The look: : Turquoise, teal, navy and white patterned T-shirt. White cotton peasant skirt. Woven white faux leather belt. Turquoise Italian Shoe Market T-strap wedge sandals. Soft gold hobo handbag. Shell-and-silver pendant on a black rubber choker. Mother of pearl and cubic zirconia earrings.
Where it came from: : Her T-shirt was an Anthropologie find. She picked up her skirt from a New York City street vendor. She found the belt and handbag at Target, and the sandals at DSW Shoes Warehouse. Her earrings came from Mariposa, and she bought the pendant on a trip to New Zealand.
She knows how to step out of the box appropriately: : "I'm trying to achieve a look that's distinctive, but not outrageous. I don't want to look like I'm trying to look too young for my age. But, I don't want to look frumpy, like an older woman who doesn't care how she looks. I also like [my look] to reflect my personality."
She believes in getting a bang for her buck: : "If I'm going to buy something, it has to serve multiple purposes. It can't be a one [time] thing, where I'm just going to wear it to a party and that's going to be the end of it. Price point is important to me. If it's absolutely fabulous and I feel like I can't live without it, then I'll buy something expensive and extravagant. It's usually not an accessory, though. It's usually something that I'm going to wear over and over and over again."
Age has its benefits: : "I've gotten over being self-conscious about body parts that, at one time, I used to hide. Like upper arms. I will wear sleeveless. But it has to be cut up, so that it shows my shoulders because I know they are beautiful. I work out. But I just can't get the jiggle out of my arms. So, I'll focus on another part ... or I might find a sleeve that just cuts off in the right place."
