Tennis: : Defending champion Andy Murray, top-ranked Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer advanced to the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open. Andy Roddick advanced after Nikolay Davydenko withdrew with a leg injury. Roddick will next face Federer, who defeated James Blake, 6-2, 6-4. Murray stopped Tommy Robredo 7-5, 6-1, and Nadal moved up after Philipp Kohlschreiber also withdrew with a leg injury. In the women's draw, top-ranked Dinara Safina defeated Lucie Safarova, 6-0, 4-6, 6-3, to advance to the quarterfinals.

Swimming: : Towson's Katie Hoff opened the Charlotte Ultraswim with a win in the 800-meter freestyle. Not that she was happy with the time. Hoff, 19, a major disappointment at the Beijing Olympics, touched first at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center in 8 minutes, 39.35 seconds - far off her personal best of 8:19.70.

Golf: : Helen Alfredsson jump-started a career-best, 10-under-par 62 by holing out for eagle from 68 yards on her second hole and took a two-stroke lead over Brittany Lincicome after the first round of the LPGA Sybase Classic in Clifton, N.J. Three-time defending champion Lorena Ochoa opened with a 71. ... Three-time champion Justin Leonard and Paul Goydos shot 7-under 63s to share the first-round lead in the PGA Texas Open in San Antonio. ... Italy's Francesco Molinari shot a 9-under 63 to take a one-stroke leader over Sweden's Johan Edfors in the Irish Open in Baltray.

Colleges: : The Johns Hopkins baseball team avenged its loss in the first round with a win over third seed and 25th-ranked North Carolina Wesleyan, 14-2, at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in Salisbury in the NCAA South Regional. The Blue Jays (25-15) used a six-run first inning to gain an early lead. The Blue Jays hit three home runs against the Battling Bishops (27-22) to break the school and Centennial Conference single-season records for home runs. Hopkins' 71 homers are the most by a team in the conference since the Blue Jays hit 70 in 2005. ... Former Duke point guard Greg Paulus will enroll in graduate school at Syracuse and try to make a comeback in football for the Orange, he said. ... Soccer: : The "All-Stars for Hope" charity game at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., next month that would have featured Cristiano Ronaldo was scrapped because of a lack of corporate sponsors.
