Hurricanes top Bruins in OT, advance

Scott Walker scored his first NHL playoff goal 18:46 into overtime to send the visiting Carolina Hurricanes into the Eastern Conference finals with a 3-2 win over the Boston Bruins. Byron Bitz gave Boston a 1-0 lead at 7:42 of the first period, and Carolina captain Rod Brind'Amour tied it six minutes later. Sergei Samsonov put the Hurricanes ahead 2-1 at 7:45 of the second period, but Milan Lucic tied it for the Bruins at 6:19 of the third. Carolina will face the Pittsburgh Penguins in the East finals.

Red Wings 4, Ducks 3: : Dan Cleary's tiebreaking goal with three minutes left lifted host Detroit over Anaheim and sent the defending Stanley Cup champion back to the Western Conference finals. Anaheim's Jonas Hiller made 36 saves, and Chris Osgood stopped 24 shots for the Red Wings, who couldn't protect an early two-goal lead. Jiri Hudler, Darren Helm and Mikael Samuelsson scored for Detroit, which will next face Chicago in a matchup of Original Six teams. Teemu Selanne and Corey Perry cut into deficits and Bobby Ryan tied it at 3 at 7:37 of the third.

Capitals: : Washington signed center Anton Gustafsson, its first-round pick in last year's NHL draft. Gustafsson is the son of former Capitals player Bengt Gustafsson. The younger Gustafsson, 19, signed a three-year, entry-level contract. He was the 21st overall selection. He took part in Washington's development camp last summer and rookie camp in September.

Canucks: : Vancouver re-signed forward Steve Bernier to a two-year contract extension. Bernier scored 15 goals and posted a career high with 32 points in 81 games in his first season with the team.

Barbaro's brother captures first race; Borel wins 900th at Churchill Downs

Nicanor suddenly has more in common with his older brother, Barbaro: A dominating win. Nicanor broke his maiden in a romp, a 15 1/4 -length victory on the turf at Delaware Park - the same track where Barbaro won his first career race. ... Two-time Kentucky Derby-winning jockey Calvin Borel, who is scheduled to ride favored Rachel Alexandra in Saturday's Preakness, became only the fourth rider in the 135-year history of Churchill Downs to win 900 races when he rode War Eagle Lady to victory. ... Premium Gold beat Expansion by 1 3/4 lengths in the $48,000 allowance feature on the turf at Belmont Park. In his debut on grass, Premium Gold ran the 1 1/8 miles on the firm course in 1:47.86. The 4-year-old trained by John Kimmel and ridden by Edgar Prado earned his third win in 14 starts. Premium Gold paid $20.40, $6.70 and $4.10.
