Play It Again

May 14, 2009|By Dan Connolly

Caught after catch

Rays first baseman Carlos Pena doubled twice to start rallies and scored each time to help pace Tampa Bay. But his most impressive play happened in the Orioles' dugout. Melvin Mora hit a pop-up in the first inning, and Pena and Rays catcher Dioner Navarro gave chase. Navarro stopped at the rail of the home dugout, but Pena continued, making a lunging catch and then flipping over the rail. He was head over heels when he was caught by several Orioles, including starter Brad Bergesen.

Scares early and often

The first at-bat set the tone for the evening, when Mora made a nice play on B.J. Upton's grounder and then dropped to the ground in pain. Trainer Richie Bancells came out and worked briefly on his knee before Mora returned to action. Orioles center fielder Adam Jones left in the fourth with a mild right hamstring strain. Rays left fielder Carl Crawford left in the fifth with a bruised right shoulder.

On deck

The Orioles play at 8:10 p.m. Thursday in Kansas City to begin a 10-game, 11-day trip. Jeremy Guthrie (2-3, 4.97 ERA) will face Gil Meche (2-3, 4.43).
