A federal judge sentenced a Glen Burnie man to more than five years in prison for his role in a credit card fraud scheme that netted $260,000 in goods and services. Leland Gland, 33, was also ordered to pay restitution for the purchases he made through fraudulently obtained credit, and will be on supervised release for five years under a sentence handed down last week by U.S. District Judge J. Frederick Motz. Gland pleaded guilty to using stolen identity information to create credit card accounts, and then placed orders on his home computer for himself and friends, authorities said. Four other people have pleaded guilty as part of the scheme, the Maryland U.S. Attorney's Office said.

Apartment building damaged in three-alarm fire

A three-alarm fire caused minor damage at an apartment building in the Arnold-Cape St. Claire section of Anne Arundel County early Sunday. Smoke detectors alerted residents to a fire in the common area of the Bellerive Place apartments on Bellerive Court off College Parkway at 6:40 a.m., Anne Arundel County Fire Lt. Keith Hamilton said. A sprinkler system extinguished the fire, Hamilton said, but because there were elderly people living in the complex, additional alarms were struck. Residents were returning to their apartments by 7:15 a.m.

Man charged with traveling to Md. for sex with girl, 12

A federal grand jury has accused a 20-year-old man of traveling from Chicago to Maryland to engage in sexual activity with a 12-year-old girl. According to the indictment, Vincent Louis Karczynski and the victim had been communicating via the Internet, cell phone and text messages since November 2008. He arrived March 27 and met the victim and a friend at a mall that day and the next day. Both days, according to the indictment, Karczynski and the victim engaged in sexual contact in a movie theater. On March 28, the victim's mother found a message on her daughter's cell phone suggesting that the girl had had sexual contact with the sender, according to the indictment. When the phone rang a short time later, the mother answered and heard a man ask, "Hey cutie, can you talk?" She asked who was calling and the man said he had the wrong number, was looking for "Joe" and then hung up. The mother confronted her daughter, who admitted to meeting Karczynski. Police traced the call to a hotel where Karczynski was staying and arrested him. If convicted, Karczynski faces a maximum sentence of 30 years in federal prison.
