Cannes, France, on the French Riviera, is best known for its film festival, which each year attracts the stars of the entertainment world. The city's motto - "Life is a festival" - is a perfect creed for inhabitants of a resort town overlooking the sparkling Mediterranean Sea and peppered with glitzy celebrities.

The 62nd Cannes Film Festival opens Wednesday and runs until May 24. This year's highlights are expected to include the premiere of Quentin Tarantino's new film, Inglourious Basterds, starring Brad Pitt, as well as Disney's new animated film, Up. Here are fives things to do in Cannes:

1

Sniff the air : Get a whiff of how French perfume is made, from the processing of raw materials to the finished product at Musee International de la Parfumerie. The museum's collection includes items associated with perfume and makeup, including one of Marie Antoinette's travel cases.

2

Shop the block : The Boulevard de la Croisette is the main drag in Cannes. Luxury hotels, casinos and high-end boutiques line the street on one side. On the other, you'll find fine, sandy beaches.

3

Go to market : Forville Market (Marche Forville) is a feast for the senses. This local farmers' market offers fresh fruit, vegetables, local fish, cheese, olives and bread. Many of the merchants are happy to give a sample of their wares.

4

Bare it at La Batterie : This beach, considered one of the best in France, is nestled against the Mediterranean. Those who wish to bare it all are welcome.

5

Try your luck : The ornate Casino Croisette, the largest casino in Cannes, features all of the classic games and slot machines. The ornate room offers something interesting at every turn, from blackjack to roulette.
