Christopher Golden Again In Ot, Sends Blue Jays To Quarterfinals

May 10, 2009|By Mike Preston , mike.preston@baltsun.com

It seemed as though Hopkins had taken control of the game to open the fourth quarter.

The Blue Jays scored three straight goals - two from Boland - to give Hopkins a three-goal lead with 10:30 left in regulation. Brown came back with two goals in the next three minutes and pulled within one on junior attackman Thomas Muldoon's goal with 2:46 remaining.

The Bears' Kyle Hollingsworth tied the score at 11-11 after dodging two Hopkins midfielders outside the crease and then shoveling in a loose ball with eight seconds left in regulation.

The goal upset Hopkins coach Dave Pietramala. The two Blue Jays midfielders failed to hit Hollingsworth, and Hopkins played soft for most of the game. The Blue Jays had no answer for Muldoon, who finished with four goals. The Bears probably should have gotten Muldoon the ball more often, because Hopkins was slow on slides and recognition.

"We had no discipline," Pietramala said. "We talked about it all week that we had to take care of the little details. It's important for us to do that because that is the way we have played the last eight years. We were more undisciplined today than we've been all season."
