Even as alumni take the occasion to reminisce about their days at the high school, English teacher David Taylor, a 1978 graduate, said he hopes they will take a look at those currently walking its halls.

"We've got a new generation that needs to be celebrated," he said.

Memories of his alma mater brought Taylor back about three years ago because he felt "so connected to people here."

"It's a small world, a tight little community," said Taylor, who, along with another alumnus who also taught there, has helped lead the centennial planning. "More than any school I've taught in, this school has had a really large group of alumni teaching here."

The support that instructors receive from the community adds to the appeal, said Tom Welzenbach, who took up teaching six years ago after retiring from an engineering career. Welzenbach said he knew he had to return to "where I started" - namely Sparrows Point, where he was a student half a century ago.

Now he's teaching his classmates' grandchildren. "There's no way I'd leave," he said.
