Bulls Charge Past Comets

Hereford Advances To Baltimore County Title Game

May 05, 2009|By Glenn Graham , glenn.graham@baltsun.com

The Hereford boys lacrosse team likes to call it "May Mayhem," a time to be playing at your best under any circumstances.

On Monday - with a berth in Tuesday night's Baltimore County championship game on the line - that meant changing venues, getting stuck in traffic and then going up against a talented Catonsville team on its home artificial turf.

No problem.

Faster to ground balls and more precise on attack, the No. 14 Bulls overwhelmed Catonsville from start to finish in coming away with a comfortable 17-9 win.

Hereford finished the regular season with a 13-1 mark and will take on No. 11 Towson for the Baltimore County championship at 7 p.m. Tuesday at CCBC-Essex. Towson handed the Bulls their only loss of the season - a 10-7 setback March 27.

Monday, the Bulls earned a chance at redemption with a balanced and explosive attack led by Rustin Bryant (four goals, three assists), Sean Konkolics (four goals, two assists) and Nick Pompa (four goals).

"The kids sold out for us. It's good and now we got a big game tomorrow night," said Hereford coach Brian King, whose Bulls have won 10 straight games. "We're looking forward to avenge our only loss. We want to beat Towson and we're ready for them."

Monday's game, originally scheduled as a Hereford home game, was moved to Catonsville because of the rain (Hereford does not have a turf field). Then, the Bulls' bus was stuck in traffic, delaying the game by 30 minutes. The Bulls, after a brief warm-up, weren't fazed, charging out to a 3-0 lead by the midway point of the first quarter.

Leading 4-2 early in the second quarter, they scored 10 straight goals to build a 14-2 lead. Catonsville fell to 11-3.
