Freeman A. Hrabowski III, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, has been named the winner of the Virginia B. Smith Innovative Leadership Award by the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education and the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning. The award recognizes innovative leaders in higher education. Hrabowski was praised for his efforts to enroll minority students in science, technology, engineering and math courses, as well as for his research and publications in the areas of math and science education. Hrabowski has been president of UMBC since 1992 and is credited with bringing the Catonsville university to national prominence.
Walk for children scheduled Saturday
The Children's Home will hold the third annual Catonsville Community 5-Kilometer Walk for Children & Families at 9 a.m. Saturday at the facility, 205 Bloomsbury Ave. The walk will go through historic Catonsville. Registration is $25 a person or $100 for a team of five. Proceeds benefit the Children's Home programs for abused, neglected or abandoned children.
