Slayton House Conservatory Camp, to be held at Slayton House in the Wilde Lake Village Green, has announced the appointment of Nathan Rosen, a teacher at Atholton High School, as its new director.

Rosen has been teaching and directing plays and musicals at Atholton since 1997. He is a graduate of St. John's College in Annapolis and holds a master's degree in theater arts from the University of Maryland, College Park.

The Conservatory Camp is open to experienced drama students in grades eight through 12 by audition. Campers will perform a full-scale musical in the Slayton House theater.

Sessions run from June 29 through July 17. The groups will perform Guys and Dolls. A second session, from July 20 through Aug. 7, will perform Once on This Island. Camp hours are from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and before- and after-care is available.

Auditions will be held from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. May 4 and from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. May 6.

Slayton House Camp of the Arts is accepting registration. Camp dates are June 22 to July 10, July 13 to July 31 and Aug. 3 to Aug. 14. Families with two or more children in the same session can get a discount.

Chess at library

The Howard County Central Library, 10375 Little Patuxent Parkway, will hold a Chess Club meeting, for youth ages 10 and older and adults, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. May 3. Beginners are welcome. Registration is not needed; the setting is informal.
