Play It Again

White Sox 8 Orioles 2

April 23, 2009|By JEFF ZREBIEC

It was clear from the outset that Orioles No. 1 starter Jeremy Guthrie didn't have his best stuff. He allowed a run on two hits and a walk and threw 24 pitches in the first inning. The second inning brought similar struggles, though the right-hander eventually settled down enough to get into the seventh inning. He allowed five earned runs, eight hits and three walks in six-plus innings.

The top four hitters in the White Sox order were responsible for almost all the damage inflicted on Orioles pitching. Leadoff man Chris Getz went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, three runs and a stolen base. No. 2 hitter Josh Fields went 3-for-5 with a homer, double and three RBIs. Carlos Quentin, who bats third, went 1-for-5 with an RBI single, and cleanup man Jim Thome was 1-for-2 with a solo homer and two walks.

The Orioles and White Sox play the series finale Thursday night at 7:05 with Adam Eaton (0-2, 11.25) opposing Chicago right-hander Bartolo Colon (1-0, 3.86). Eaton has made one career start against the White Sox, in 2007, pitching seven shutout innings.
