Meet The Band

April 23, 2009|By Sam Sessa

Hometown: Baltimore

Members: Bryan "Snackie" Hillman, keyboards and vocals; Eddie Chabot, electric bass and vocals; Zak Fusciello, drums; John Dierker, tenor sax; Chris Bavaria, guitar and vocals; Felicia Carter, vocals

Founded: 1997

Style: jazz, R&B, Latin and soul

Influenced by: Henry Mancini, Horace Silver, Herbie Hancock, James Brown

Notable: Though the men in the band have sung live for years, they have traditionally made albums with a female vocalist, Hillman said. That will change this summer, when the group will go into a studio and cut a handful of tracks with male vocals. They plan to release the songs online, and maybe make one or two music videos to accompany them, he said. Finally, the guys in the group will get a chance to sing lead.

Quotable : "We've never really tapped into that in the recording studio, and I'm not entirely sure why," Hillman said. "It doesn't make any sense why we haven't done that. We have a real library of material that we sing. It's time."

The Swingin' Swamis perform Friday at The 13th Floor at the Belvedere, 1 E. Chase St. The music starts at 10:30 p.m. $5 before 11 p.m.; $10 after. Go to The band:
