Several Orioles - and Red Sox, for that matter - were clearly not pleased with the strike zone of plate umpire Doug Eddings. Leadoff man Brian Roberts was particularly perturbed by two calls in his first at-bat and one during his second. In the latter at-bat, Roberts carried on a heated conversation with Eddings before Orioles manager Dave Trembley finally came out of the dugout both to protect Roberts and get in his say.
What better way to break an 0-for-17 slump than to lay down a bunt against a tough pitcher like Josh Beckett? That's what Cesar Izturis did in the fifth, and he not only reached base safely, but he also ignited a four-run rally that got the Orioles back into the game. Roberts followed Izturis' bunt single with a double. Beckett issued consecutive walks, the second one forcing in a run. Then Orioles scored three more runs on Aubrey Huff's bases-loaded double and an error by Nick Green to make the score 6-4.
Orioles right-hander Koji Uehara (2-0, 7.20) will make his third career start Sunday opposite Red Sox left-hander Jon Lester (0-2, 9.00) in a game scheduled for 1:35 p.m. at Fenway Park.
