Conservation and recreational fishing groups and a regional regulatory agency are asking a federal judge to make an example of five watermen who pleaded guilty to poaching millions of dollars worth of striped bass from the Chesapeake Bay and Potomac River when sentencing begins next week. In letters to U.S. District Judge Peter J. Messitte, groups such as the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and state chapters of the Coastal Conservation Association have advised him to send a message to poachers and unscrupulous fish dealers that the federal government is serious in its prosecution of those who violate natural resources laws.
