A man was fatally shot Monday morning in Southwest Baltimore near a city elementary school that was closed for spring break.

The shooting was reported at 9:11 a.m. in the 2100 block of Christian St., just yards from Samuel F.B. Morse Elementary School. Police found the man, who was in his 20s, suffering from at least one gunshot wound to his torso.

Maj. Terrence McLarney, commander of the homicide unit, said detectives believe the man was shot in a nearby alley and then jumped into a friend's car. The car went a short distance, on Christian Street, before stopping.

The man was taken by ambulance to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he later died. His name was not released pending notification of next of kin.

In the alley near where the man was shot, police found a small, black semiautomatic handgun that is believed to have been used in the shooting. Police did not release any details about a possible motive or suspect in the killing.
