Tennis: : Top-ranked Serena Williams twice lost five games in a row but finished with a flourish and beat No. 17 seed Zheng Jie, 7-5, 5-7, 6-3, to advance to the quarterfinals at the Sony Ericsson Open in Key Biscayne, Fla. No. 5 seed Venus Williams beat Agnieszka Radwanska, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. On the men's side, top-ranked Rafael Nadal and No. 4 seed Andy Murray advanced to the fourth round.

College lacrosse:: For the first time in three seasons, the No. 1 ranked men's team in Division III is not Salisbury. Stevenson took over the top spot and the Sea Gulls fell to No. 4 in the latest U.S. Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association poll, ending Salisbury's streak of 29 weeks at No. 1 dating to Feb. 7, 2007. ... Troy Hubbard had four goals and an assist as Hood (1-10, 0-5 Capital Athletic Conference) fell, 23-11, to visiting York (5-5, 3-2).

Sailing: : US Sailing officials announced that they will nominate Gary Jobson, an Annapolis sailor, author and ESPN analyst, to serve as the governing body's next president. Jobson, 58, won the America's Cup in 1977 as tactician for Ted Turner and has served on the Olympic Sailing Committee for 12 years. The election is Oct. 25.
