Auto racing: : Jeff Gordon will start on the pole in Sunday's Sprint Cup Goody's 500 at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway after rain washed out qualifying.

College football: : Scheduled to open the 2009 season against Morgan State, Towson will now play its first game at Northwestern on Sept. 5. The Tigers' game at the Bears will be played Sept. 26, and the home opener against Coastal Carolina is Sept 19.

College wrestling: : Maryland's Kerry McCoy was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year. McCoy guided the Terps to their second straight ACC championship in his first year at the helm in College Park. The Terps' Brendan Byrne Jr. (125 pounds), Steven Bell Jr. (133), Alex Krom Jr. (141) and Hudson Taylor Jr. (197) were named All-ACC.

Boxing: : Eddie Chambers (34-1, 18 KOs) landed solid straight punches all night, outboxing former heavyweight champion Samuel Peter to win a majority decision in Los Angeles.

Tennis: : No. 2 seed Roger Federer began his bid for a third Key Biscayne title by beating American Kevin Kim, 6-3, 6-2, in the Sony Ericsson Open in Florida. In women's play, No. 2 Dinara Safina beat Mathilde Johansson of France, 6-1, 6-3.
