Hyson fans 13

Shortly after earning a 1-0 win over Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference champion Archbishop Spalding on Friday, Seton Keough sophomore Megan Hyson was asked to sum up the Gators' impressive 3-0 week.

She gave a quick "Great," then added, "Absolutely great!"

Hyson held the No. 3 Cavaliers (2-1, 1-1 league) to three hits while striking out 13. The Gators (4-0, 3-0) got a single from left fielder Taylor Kairos with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to drive in Carly Read for the only run.

On Monday, Hyson no-hit two-time defending Class 4A state champion Chesapeake-AA in a 2-0 win over two-time All-Metro Player of the Year Lauren Gibson. Friday, she was a bit better than first-team All-Metro senior Elaine Nescio, who allowed four hits and an unearned run.

"We're really excited. Our team worked hard; we came out there and got the job done. We did real well," Hyson said.

The execution by both teams looked more like that found in a late-season game than one in March, largely because of the fine pitching by Hyson and Nescio. The first hit didn't come until the bottom of the fourth.

Read opened the sixth with a sharp single past second base and advanced to second when Julia Draper reached on an infield error. Nescio retired Bridget O'Malley and Stephanie Martin before Kairos scored Read with a line drive up the middle. Kairos also provided the game's big defensive play, when she threw a strike to second base in the fifth to retire Jean Sonni, who was trying to stretch a single into a double.

Hyson, who relied heavily on her curve and screwball, retired the Cavaliers in order in the top of the seventh.

"The effort has been great. We're working hard at practice ... putting in the time," Seton Keough coach Jackie Boswell said.
