Erin Laschinger knew yesterday's Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference game was a big one for No. 3 Notre Dame Prep, so she did what a leader does: She stepped up.

The senior, who will attend the University of Virginia in the fall on a lacrosse scholarship, scored six goals to lead the Blazers (3-0, 2-0) to a 17-9 victory over fifth-ranked John Carroll (1-1, 1-1) in a key early-season game.

"We wanted to come out strong, and we did," Laschinger said. "We got behind, but then we pulled everything together. We played as a team, and a win like this will give us confidence going forward."

The Patriots used a goal by Jenn Etzel 19 seconds into the game to take a 1-0 lead, but then NDP used its speed - even on the drenched field - and took a 6-1 advantage with 15:39 left in the first half. Laschinger, Kelsi Bozel and Sydney Peterson each scored twice in the run.

John Carroll, led by four goals from Brittany Dashiell, cut the margin to 9-6 at the half, but the Blazers scored seven of the first nine goals of the second half to put it away.

"We ran our transition game well today," NDP coach Mary Bartel said. "It was a credit to John Carroll's defense that they slowed us down [at the end of the second half]."

Bartel cited draws as a factor in the win.

"I was talking to one of my friends ... and they told me, 'Win the draw, rule the world,' " Bartel said.
