Curtis Holmes McDonogh, lacrosse

The senior anchored the Eagles' 4-0 start to the season."Curtis is a two-way midfielder for us, playing both offense and defense," coach Andy Hilgartner said. "And his strength is facing off. ... I think the toughness he brings from football and the balance he uses in wrestling are qualities that really contribute to his success on the lacrosse field." Holmes was an All-Metro pick in football and wrestling. He will attend Maryland in the fall on a lacrosse scholarship.

Lauren Gibson Chesapeake-AA, softball

The senior pitcher picked up where she left off last year for the two-time defending Class 4A state champion and No. 1 Cougars, tossing a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts and not allowing an earned run in a 5-1 season-opening win over No. 14 Glenelg. Gibson, a two-time Metro Player of the Year, also went 2-for-3 with a double and run scored. Headed to Tennessee, Gibson went 17-2 with a 1.23 ERA last season, striking out 165 in 120 innings. She also hit .500 with 29 RBIs and 34 runs scored.
