Pitcher guides Bears to victory

Speierman strikes out 16 in defeating Atholton

Stephanie Speierman allowed three hits and struck out 16 Monday as the Hammond softball team prevailed, 9-0, over host Atholton (1-1).

Speierman, who was named one of ESPN's top 25 players in the country earlier in the week, also scored three runs and had an RBI double in the third inning for the Golden Bears (2-0).

Freshman Hannah Force went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

GLENELG 13, MOUNT HEBRON 2:: Casey Schmidt pitched a no-hitter and Amanda Segrist hit two home runs as the Gladiators (2-1) beat the visiting Vikings.


PATAPSCO 5, TOWSON 3:: A wild pitch and a throwing error led to two ninth-inning runs as the visiting Patriots (1-0) outlasted the Generals (0-2) in extra innings. Eric Ryan pitched a complete game for Patapsco.

FRANKLIN 10, MILFORD MILL 0:: Ben Moreland struck out eight in a complete-game one-hitter as the Indians (1-0) shut out the visiting Millers (0-2). Josh Shere led the offense with two extra-base hits and four RBIs.

HAMMOND 8, ATHOLTON 7: : Travis Clark struck out nine in 4 1/3 innings and hit a home run as the visiting Golden Bears (2-0) defeated the Raiders (1-1).

HEREFORD 15, FALLSTON 14, 2OT: : Rustin Bryant scored the winning goal as the host Bulls (2-0) came from behind to defeat the Cougars (1-2).
