Man's body pulled from water near Fells Point

Baltimore firefighters pulled a body from the water near Fells Point yesterday afternoon, but authorities said it was too soon to determine whether foul play was involved. It was the third time in two weeks that a body had been retrieved from the Inner Harbor.

Yesterday, fire and police officials responded to a call of a body floating near the 1400 block of Thames St. about 12:30 p.m. and retrieved it a short time later, said Fire Chief Kevin Cartwright. The body, which appeared to be that of a Hispanic male age 20 to 30, seemed to have been in the water for some time, he said.

Police spokeswoman Nicole Monroe said that an autopsy will be performed and that the cause of death might not be homicide. Other bodies have been found in the water after people fell in accidentally or while drunk.

It is also unclear, Cartwright said, whether the man fell in the water where he was found or whether the body floated in with the tide.

About 6:30 p.m. Thursday, the body of a man was removed from the Inner Harbor near the paddle boat pier off the Pratt Street Pavilion. No identification has been made, and a ruling on the cause of death awaits an autopsy. On March 9, the body of Ryan Davis, 26, of no fixed address, was retrieved from the water off the Broadway Pier in Fells Point. An autopsy found that Davis, who had been reported missing for a few days, drowned.
