Events scheduled at Patuxent center

The Friends of Patuxent will present the 20th annual Patuxent Wildlife Art Show and Sale from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. March 29 at the recently reopened National Wildlife Visitor Center, 10901 Scarlet Tanager Loop, Laurel.

An artists' reception, with hors d'oeuvres, live music and a silent auction fundraiser, will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Friday. Tickets are $40 in advance; $45 at the door. Information or to order tickets: 301-497-5789 or www.friendspwrc.org.

During the weekend, the Friends of Patuxent will sponsor wildlife interpretive tram tours, a chance to see live animals, artisan demonstrations and, on Saturday, the Maryland Migratory Game Bird Design Contest and Maryland Black Bear Conservation Stamp Contest.

The National Wildlife Visitor Center is just off Powder Mill Road, between the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and Route 197. The National Wildlife Refuge includes 13,000 acres of forests, meadows and wetlands.

The refuge will offer a Discovery Hike, for children ages 5 to 7 to learn about life in the refuge, from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. today. A Bird Walk for all ages will be held from 8:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. today at the refuge's North Tract, at Route 198 between the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and Route 32.

Student film fest : The fifth annual Howard County Student Film Festival will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab's Kossiakoff Center in North Laurel. Original, family-friendly films made by students around the county will be screened. Door prizes will be awarded to selected members of the audience, and an ice cream social is planned after the screenings.
