Dante Holmes went off for a career-high 34 points as the St. Frances boys basketball team took a 15-5 lead and never trailed in a 64-58 win over DeMatha in the semifinals of the Alhambra Catholic Invitational at Frostburg State.

Holmes used his aggressiveness to get easy baskets inside and earn trips to the foul line. The junior also grabbed nine rebounds for the No. 2 Panthers (33-3), who led by 13 at halftime.

Terrell Vinson added 12 points and a team-high 10 rebounds for St. Frances, which held Naji Hibbert to seven points.

The Panthers meet Gonzaga today in the championship.

Meanwhile, Jon Graham had 24 points and 14 rebounds as Calvert Hall bounced back in the second round to beat Cathedral of Ontario, 69-62, yesterday.

The Cardinals (28-7) lost in the opening round to defeat Bishop McNamara, 47-43.

The Cavaliers will face Bishop O'Connell in the fifth-place game today.

Edmondson 21, Northwestern 0: : Duane Smith (1-0) pitched a no-hitter and struck out 10 for the Red Storm (1-0).

Glenelg 2, Howard 0:: A.J. Rosenthal gave up two hits and struck out 13 en route to a shutout as the Gladiators (1-0) defeated the visiting Lions (0-1).


No. 3 Archbishop Spalding 4, No. 11 Mount de Sales 3:: Jean Sonni's hit with the bases loaded and one out in the ninth scored Melanie Gunning for the winning run as the Cavaliers (1-0) defeated the visiting Sailors (0-1).

No. 6 Hammond 5, Centennial 0: : Stephanie Speierman struck out 18 in throwing a no-hitter as the Bears (1-0) defeated the Eagles (0-1).

No. 13 Eastern Tech 17, Chesapeake-BC 0: : Right-hander Page Yeager (1-0) threw a no-hitter, striking out 11 in the season opener for the Mavericks (1-0).
